Overview
The Safiery 48V 40A On Board Charger charges 48V lithium banks from a 110V or 240V AC supply. Safiery describes it as a marine and automotive grade unit in an IP67 housing, with CAN communication. It is listed among the charging accessories of the Solid State Lithium 48V range, where Safiery also offers a 25A version of the same charger.
- Semi-solid-state cells rated 10,000 cycles at 80% DOD
- One stackable 420mm case for every voltage
- CAN BMS read by Victron GX devices
- Up to 40 batteries in parallel via RS485
- 48V packs tested to IEC 62619 by Intertek
- 5-year warranty
How it works
Safiery Solid State Lithium batteries use semi-solid-state wafer cells in which a ceramic electrolyte replaces most of the liquid of a conventional lithium-ion cell; Safiery states that only 3–5% liquid remains as a wetting agent. The cells are rated for at least 10,000 cycles at 80% depth of discharge, and the manufacturer reports nail-penetration, 200kN crush, 130°C heat and 60-minute short-circuit tests without a thermal event.
Each battery has its own BMS with over-charge, over-discharge, over-current, over-temperature and short-circuit protection plus cell balancing. Banks are built in parallel only, never in series. One battery acts as master and talks to the system over CAN, while the others are chained to it with RS485 cables from OUT to IN. Pressing Reset/On on the master starts the whole string; a flashing red LED signals a fault or a loose data cable.
Key features
All versions share an ABS case 420mm long and about 250mm high that stacks and locks into the next battery. The 12V model stores 217Ah and delivers 200A continuously, 250A for 2 seconds; the 24V model is rated 100A continuous. The 48V packs (51.2V, 53Ah) are offered with a 2C BMS rated 100A and Bluetooth, or a 3C BMS rated 150A for high loads such as electric propulsion.
For charging from shore or generator power, Safiery lists 48V on-board chargers of 25A and 40A with CAN, an IP67 housing and 110V or 240V AC input.
Installation and compatibility
Batteries are joined side by side or in a stack with tin-plated flexible copper straps of 50mm² cross-section rated 250A, so the bank load through the straps must stay within 250A: about 3,000W at 12V, 6,250W at 24V and 12.5kW at 48V according to the manual. Check polarity before connecting, and keep the protective caps on unused data sockets, otherwise the warranty is void.
The CAN port uses standard isolated NMEA-type cabling without power and has a built-in 120Ω termination resistor. On a Victron Cerbo GX it connects to VE.Can set to 250kbit/s; a Victron blue CAN terminator may be needed if the battery is the only other CAN device. A volt-free contact across pins 7 and 8 of the master's IN socket switches the bank on and off remotely.
Monitoring and settings
Through the CAN BMS, a Victron GX device shows state of charge, voltage, current and temperature together with minimum and maximum cell voltages and temperatures, and receives the charge voltage and current limits that steer the chargers. Versions with the Bluetooth option can also be read with the Safiery Solid State app for Android and iOS. For storage over three months Safiery recommends about 50% state of charge, checked every six months.
Questions and answers
Can Safiery Solid State batteries be connected in series?
No. The manual allows parallel connection only; for 24V or 48V systems use the dedicated 24V or 48V models.
How many batteries can be connected in parallel?
The manual and datasheet give a maximum of 40 units, linked by RS485 data cables and 50mm² copper straps rated 250A.
Do they work with Victron systems?
Yes. The CAN BMS is designed to be read by Victron GX devices on VE.Can at 250kbit/s, which then control charging using the limits sent by the battery.
What is the difference between the 48V 2C and 3C versions?
Both are 51.2V 53Ah packs (types 48V53AH2C and 48V53AH3C). The 2C has a 100A continuous BMS with current limiting and Bluetooth; the 3C allows 150A continuous for high-power loads.
What cell chemistry do the 48V packs use?
Safiery's EU declaration of conformity lists lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) cells in a 1P16S configuration for the 48V53AH2C and 48V53AH3C.
