Overview

The Inverter RS Smart Solar 48/6000 combines a 48V inverter, a bi-directional DC-DC converter and two isolated 3kW MPPT trackers in one 11kg unit for off-grid solar systems. It accepts up to 6kW of PV from strings of up to 450V (65–450V MPPT range, 120V start-up), with a built-in PV isolator, and charges the battery at up to 100A from solar. The inverter supplies 4800–5300W continuously at 25°C and 9kW for 3 seconds. Up to 12 units can run in parallel, or four per phase in three-phase systems.

  • 48V inverter, 4800–5300W continuous at 25°C
  • 9kW for 3 seconds, 7kW for 4 minutes
  • Smart Solar: two 3kW MPPT trackers, 65–450V
  • Up to 12 units in parallel, 4 per phase in three-phase
  • Display, Bluetooth, VE.Can and VE.Direct ports
  • 11kg, built-in battery monitor

How it works

The Inverter RS is a lightweight high-frequency inverter for 48V batteries. Continuous output rises from 4800W at 46V to 5300W at 52V battery voltage at 25°C, with 4500W at 40°C, 9kW for 3 seconds and 7kW for 4 minutes. It has no AC input and is intended for off-grid systems. A PV inverter of up to 5000W can be connected to its AC output: surplus solar charges the battery, and the Inverter RS raises the output frequency to throttle it once the battery is nearly full.

The Smart Solar version adds a bi-directional DC-DC converter and two independent MPPT trackers of 3kW each, with a 65–450V operating range, 120V start-up voltage and a built-in PV isolator switch for both strings. Total charge current from the internal MPPT and AC-coupled PV is limited to 100A. Victron notes that the PV open-circuit voltage should not exceed eight times the battery float voltage, for example 400V for a 50V battery.

Installation and compatibility

Install the unit upright with 30cm clearance above and below, on a non-flammable surface, away from water and direct sunlight. Victron's minimum battery is 200Ah lead-acid or 50Ah lithium, with a 125A DC fuse on 35mm² cable up to 2m, or 200A on 70mm² up to 5m. Victron lithium batteries are connected through a smallBMS to the 2-wire BMS remote inputs. An internal ground relay bonds neutral to chassis, so a type A RCD can be used on the output, which must never be connected to another AC supply.

Parallel systems and monitoring

Up to 12 units can be paralleled over VE.Can, and three-phase systems take up to four units per phase; Smart and Smart Solar models can be mixed, but not with the Multi RS. All units must share one battery bank and be fused individually on the AC and DC side. Settings are made in VictronConnect over Bluetooth, unit by unit. A GX device such as the Cerbo GX connects only through VE.Can and adds VRM monitoring, DVCC and the VM-3P75CT energy meter; the VE.Direct port serves a GlobalLink 520.

Questions and answers

Can the Inverter RS be connected to the grid or a generator?

No. It has no AC input, and its output must never be connected to another AC supply. Only wave-synchronising PV inverters may be connected to the AC output.

Can I charge the battery from a PV inverter on the AC output?

Yes, from a PV inverter of up to 5000W. Charging from AC-coupled PV stops at about 98% state of charge; for a full charge Victron points to the internal MPPT of the Smart Solar version or a separate DC MPPT charger.

Can Smart and Smart Solar units be combined?

Yes. Both models can be mixed in parallel systems of up to 12 units or in three-phase systems with up to four units per phase, linked via VE.Can. Mixing with the Multi RS is not supported.

Which batteries are suitable?

Victron gives a minimum of 200Ah for lead-acid and 50Ah for lithium batteries. Victron lithium batteries use a smallBMS on the remote inputs; with DVCC and a CAN-bus BMS on a GX device, the BMS takes over the charge limits.

How large can the PV array be on the Smart Solar?

Each of the two trackers accepts up to 3kW, 450V maximum and 12A operating current. Victron recommends checking the cold-weather open-circuit voltage with its MPPT sizing calculator and keeping a 10% safety margin.
