GoodWe GW5000-SBP-205kW single-phase AC-coupled battery inverter for 48V batteries

Overview

The GW5000-SBP-20 is a 5kW single-phase AC-coupled battery inverter from GoodWe's SBP G2 series. Without PV inputs of its own, it works alongside an existing grid-tied inverter and manages a 48V battery with up to 120A, charging at 5kW and discharging at 5.3kW. Backup provides 5kVA continuously and 10kVA for 10 seconds, with switch-over under 10ms. Feed-in is capped at 4.6kW where VDE-AR-N 4105 applies. The isolated, fanless unit weighs 19.5kg.

How it works

The SBP G2 is a battery inverter without PV inputs. It connects on the AC side of a house that already has a grid-tied PV inverter, measures the power flow with its meter and charges a 48V lithium battery when there is surplus, then discharges it to cover household demand. The existing PV inverter stays in place, which makes the SBP G2 a straightforward way to add storage to an older installation.

If the grid fails, the BACK-UP output switches over in less than 10ms and supplies selected circuits from the battery, with a 10-second overload of up to 10kVA for starting appliances. Operating modes such as self-consumption, backup and time-of-use are selected in the app, and the battery reserve for outages can be set as a backup state of charge.

Installation and compatibility

The battery port covers 40–60V and accepts up to 75A on the 3.6kW model and 120A on the 5 and 6kW models. Approved batteries include GoodWe Lynx Home U (LX U5.0-30, LX U5.4-L, LX U5.4-20) and Lynx Home A, plus listed BYD, LG and Pylontech 48V models; lead-acid batteries are not supported. The isolated, fanless unit weighs about 19.5kg and is wall-mounted indoors or outdoors (IP65).

A two-CT meter such as GM1000D or GMK110D, purchased separately, measures both the grid connection and the PV inverter. GoodWe notes that a zero-export limit cannot be combined with an AC-coupled system and an existing PV inverter: the export limit must stay above 5% of the PV inverter's rated power. Several SBP G2 units of the same model can be paralleled, but not in a coupling scenario.

Monitoring and settings

The SBP G2 shares its user manual with the ES G2 series. Set-up runs through the SolarGo app and monitoring through SEMS+ using a Wi-Fi, WiFi/LAN or 4G dongle; the battery communicates over CAN and the meter over RS485. CEI 0-21, VDE-AR-N 4105 and EN 50549-1 certificates are shared with the ES G2, and the CEI 0-21 approval covers Lynx Home U and Lynx Home A batteries.
