Overview
The SBS2.5-1VL-10 is SMA's smallest storage inverter: 2500W single-phase, 11A, for high-voltage batteries of 100–500V. It is connected on the AC side, so it can retrofit storage to an existing PV system next to the original inverter, with an SMA Energy Meter or Sunny Home Manager providing the grid measurement. At 9.2kg and 450×357×122mm it is light enough for one installer. Approved batteries are BYD Battery-Box H and Premium HVS 5.1–10.2 and LG RESU 7H/10H type C; it has no backup function.

How it works
Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 is an AC-coupled battery inverter for parallel grid operation. It is installed next to an existing or new PV inverter and, guided by an SMA Energy Meter or Sunny Home Manager, charges a high-voltage lithium-ion battery with surplus energy and discharges it to cover household demand. SMA states that only three components are needed to retrofit storage: the Sunny Boy Storage, a battery and an energy meter. Other generators, such as wind or CHP, can feed the same system.
Key features
Rated power is 2500W at 230V with 11A maximum AC current; the battery input accepts 100–500V at up to 10A and 2650W DC. Maximum efficiency is 96.8% and European efficiency 96.1%, with no-load consumption of 10W or less and 2W or less in standby. Integrated dynamic active power limitation from 0 to 100% controls feed-in for SMA PV inverters with Webconnect. Battery backup is not available on this model, and the battery communicates via CAN bus.
Installation and compatibility
At 9.2kg and 450×357×122mm the IP65 unit can be mounted by one person, indoors or outdoors, and operates from -40 to +60°C. It uses SUNCLIX DC connectors and an AC connector. No external RCD is required; where local rules demand one, type A or B rated at least 100mA is compatible. SMA approves BYD Battery-Box H 5.1–10.2, Battery-Box Premium HVS 5.1–10.2 and LG RESU 7H and 10H type C, all for self-consumption only.
Monitoring and grid codes
Commissioning is done through the integrated web server over WLAN or Ethernet from a smartphone, tablet or laptop, and the system connects directly to Sunny Portal and the SMA Energy App via Webconnect. Modbus (SMA and SunSpec) is supported. Listed approvals include C10/11, CE, IEC 62109-1, EN 50549-1/-2, G98/G99, RD 1699, VDE 0126-1-1, VDE-AR-N 4105 and VFR 2014. The warranty can be extended from 5 to 10 years free of charge on registration.
Questions and answers
Can it be added to an existing PV system?
Yes. It is AC-coupled, so it works next to the existing PV inverter; SMA lists retrofit with inverters from other suppliers as an option, together with a compatible energy meter.
Does the Sunny Boy Storage 2.5 support backup?
No. The datasheet marks a retrofittable battery-backup function as not available, and SMA approves its batteries only for optimising self-consumption.
Which batteries are approved?
BYD Battery-Box H 5.1–10.2 (4–8 modules), Battery-Box Premium HVS 5.1–10.2 (2–4 modules) and LG RESU 7H and RESU 10H type C.
Is it a low-voltage battery inverter?
No. Its battery input works at 100–500V with 360V rated voltage, so it needs a high-voltage lithium-ion battery from SMA's approved list.
