Who we areNew, original SMA products with full manufacturer warranty, supplied with their documentation.
The HS-BM-3.28-10 is the single building block of SMA Home Storage: a 3.28kWh, 96V nominal lithium iron phosphate module weighing 38kg. Modules are connected in series, so the number you order sets the stack energy and voltage, from 3.28kWh with one module to 19.68kWh with six. Plan two to five modules (6.56–16.40kWh) for a Sunny Tripower Smart Energy, one to five for a Sunny Boy Smart Energy, and up to six for a Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 20–30.
SMA Home Storage is a modular high-voltage battery built from identical HS-BM-3.28-10 modules. Each module holds 3.28kWh at 96V nominal with lithium iron phosphate cells. Modules are wired in series, so voltage and energy add up: two modules give 6.56kWh at 192V, five give 16.40kWh at 480V and six reach 19.68kWh at 576V. Charge and discharge current is limited to 36A, and the stack talks to the hybrid inverter over RJ45 using the SMA battery interface.
Usable capacity is rated at 100% depth of discharge, 0.2C and +25°C, with 94.5% battery efficiency and 2W night-time self-consumption per module. A module weighs 38kg, measures 610×483×214.6mm and has MC4 DC connectors, an input-side disconnection point and reverse-polarity protection. It charges between 0 and 50°C and discharges between -10 and 50°C. With an SMA hybrid inverter the system has a black-start function for backup supply. Listed approvals are CE, UN 38.3, IEC 62619, IEC 62477 and VDE-AR-E 2510-50.
Modules hang on the supplied wall bracket, stand on the optional HS-BU-10 base unit or mount back to back; the manual shows up to five modules in one column. The site must be dry, level, out of direct sun and below 2000m. Each SMA inverter accepts a set range: Sunny Boy Smart Energy and Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 5–15 take 3.2–16.4kWh, Sunny Tripower Smart Energy 6.5–16.4kWh with the HS-COM-CBL-3-10 cable, and Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 20–30 6.5–19.6kWh. A top cover (HS-TC-10) closes the stack.
Module firmware is read and updated through the inverter user interface, and operating data reach the SMA Energy App and Sunny Portal via the inverter. According to the manual, modules with firmware 1.1.40.R or later can be added after commissioning to raise both energy and charge/discharge power; an update may be needed first. The datasheet gives a two-year window for capacity expansion. The 10-year warranty requires registration at my.sma-service.com within 30 days of first commissioning.
It depends on the inverter. Sunny Tripower Smart Energy needs at least two modules (6.5kWh) and accepts up to five; Sunny Boy Smart Energy works from one module up to five; Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 20–30 accepts two to six.
It is a high-voltage system. One module is 96V nominal, and modules are connected in series up to 576V, so it works only with SMA's high-voltage hybrid inverters, not with 48V inverters.
Yes. The manual states that modules with firmware 1.1.40.R or later can be extended after commissioning, possibly after a firmware update; the datasheet indicates expansion within two years.
Yes. The modules are rated IP65 and approved for indoor and outdoor use, but must not be exposed to direct sunlight and must stay below 2000m altitude.
SMA lists a base unit for floor mounting (HS-BU-10), a top cover (HS-TC-10) and a communication cable for Sunny Tripower Smart Energy (HS-COM-CBL-3-10).
