Overview

The SBSE4.0-50 provides 4000W single-phase output at 230V with 17.4A rated current. Its three MPP trackers accept up to 8kWp of PV between 60 and 480V, and the battery is charged at up to 10kW and discharged at up to 4211W. The European efficiency is 96.8%. Like the rest of the series it has an integrated AFCI, a manual 16A emergency socket, and optional automatic backup through SMA Backup 1P or SMA Backup 3P Kit.

  • 3.6, 4.0, 5.0 and 6.0kW single-phase models
  • Three MPP trackers, 600V max., 15A per input
  • Battery input 90–500V, up to 10kW charging
  • Manual 16A emergency socket, automatic backup with SMA Backup 1P/3P
  • Integrated AFCI (SMA ArcFix) and SMA ShadeFix
  • 17.5kg, IP65, natural convection

How it works

Sunny Boy Smart Energy combines a single-phase PV inverter and a battery inverter in one 17.5kg enclosure. Three MPP trackers handle up to 7.2–12kWp of PV, depending on the model, and a DC battery input charges a high-voltage lithium-ion battery at up to 10kW. An approved energy meter (SMA Energy Meter, Energy Meter CT or Sunny Home Manager 2.0) and a battery are needed for self-consumption operation, peak load shaving and the time-based battery functions.

Key features

The PV inputs work from 60 to 480V MPP with a 66V start-up voltage, so short strings are possible; inputs A and B can be paralleled for several strings. Each input takes 15A, and short-circuit current may reach 30A as long as all inputs together stay within 66A. An arc-fault circuit interrupter is built in. For grid outages there is a manually switched 16A secure power supply socket, and the optional SMA Backup 1P or Backup 3P Kit gives automatic single-phase backup of 7300W with 9200W for 30s.

Installation and compatibility

The 500×586×236mm IP65 enclosure is cooled by natural convection and connects with lever clamps for PV and push-in clamps for the battery. No external RCD is required when automatic disconnection is ensured by the overcurrent protection; if local rules demand one, type A or B rated 30mA or more works. Approved batteries are SMA Home Storage 3.2–16.4kWh, BYD Battery-Box Premium HVM and HVS, and Pylontech Force H3; parallel battery units are not supported. Up to six devices, three with batteries, can form one system.

Monitoring and settings

The inverter runs the ennexOS user interface, commissioned with the SMA 360° App over WLAN or two Ethernet ports, and shows balances in Sunny Portal powered by ennexOS and the SMA Energy App. Interfaces include BAT-CAN, RS-485 for the energy meter, Modbus (SMA, SunSpec) and an SG Ready multifunction relay. The datasheet lists AS4777-2, C10/11, CEI 0-21, EN 50549-1, IEC 62109, TED749 and VDE-AR-N 4105 as certificates and permits. Warranty extends from 5 to 10 years with registration.

Questions and answers

Does it supply power during a blackout?

Yes. Without accessories it offers a manually switched secure power supply socket of up to 16A. With the SMA Backup 1P or SMA Backup 3P Kit the house loads are switched over automatically, at 7300W rated power.

Which batteries are approved?

SMA Home Storage from 3.2 to 16.4kWh, BYD Battery-Box Premium HVM (8.3–22.1kWh) and HVS (5.1–10.2kWh), and Pylontech Force H3. Multiple battery units in parallel are not approved.

Which energy meter do I need?

One of the meters approved by SMA: SMA Energy Meter (EMETER-20), Energy Meter CT with one or three CT terminals, or Sunny Home Manager 2.0.

What is the limit for the 5.0 and 6.0 models in Germany?

According to the datasheet, the 5.0 and 6.0 models are limited to 4600W / 4600VA when configured to VDE-AR-N 4105.

Is it certified for Italy?

The datasheet lists CEI 0-21 among its certificates and permits. Ask for the current CEI 0-21 declaration for your model when planning an Italian connection.
