Overview

The SUN2000-17KTL-M5 is a 17kW three-phase string inverter with 18.7kVA maximum apparent power. Huawei recommends up to 25,500Wp of PV on its two MPP trackers, which reach full load between 440V and 800V within a 200–1,000V operating range and 1,100V maximum input. European efficiency is 98.1%. Maximum output current is 27.1A at 400V, and Huawei recommends a 40A three-phase AC breaker rated at 415V or more. The 21kg IP66 unit includes AFCI and accepts module optimisers.

How it works

The KTL-M5 series is Huawei's compact three-phase grid-tied string inverter range from 12 to 25kW. Two MPP trackers each take two strings, with 30A per tracker for two strings or 20A for a single string and 40A short-circuit current, inside a 200–1,000V operating window and 1,100V maximum input voltage. Full-load tracking starts between 370V and 530V depending on the model, so string design should keep the operating voltage in that window.

Recommended maximum PV power ranges from 18,000Wp on the 12KTL to 37,500Wp on the 25KTL; with long strings fully equipped with SUN2000-450W-P optimisers, Huawei quotes up to 40,000Wp. The output is 3W+N+PE at 220/380V, 230/400V or 239.6/415V. Protection includes type II DC and class II AC surge protection, a residual current monitoring unit, AFCI, string fault detection and ripple receiver control.

Installation and compatibility

Mount the inverter vertically or with up to 15° back tilt. Each inverter needs its own three-phase AC circuit breaker rated at 415V AC or more: 40A for the 12KTL to 20KTL and 50A or 63A for the 25KTL; knife switches are not allowed. A residual current device, if fitted, must trip at 300mA or more per inverter. TN-S, TN-C, TN-C-S, TT and IT systems are supported; in TT systems the N-PE voltage must stay below 30V.

SUN2000-450W-P2, SUN2000-600W-P, MERC-1100W-P and MERC-1300W-P optimisers can be added, but the SUN2000 and MERC families cannot be combined. Strings on the same MPPT must use the same model and number of modules and optimisers, and PV outputs must not be earthed. The wiring diagrams also include an external rapid shutdown switch supplied by the installer.

Monitoring and settings

Integrated WLAN and the FusionSolar app handle commissioning and monitoring. WLAN/Ethernet through the SDongleA-05 and 4G through the SDongleA-03 or SDongleB-06 are optional, and RS485 connects a SmartLogger. For metering at the grid connection point Huawei lists the DTSU666-H, DTSU666-HW, YDS60-80, YDS60-C24, DTSU71 and DHSU1079-CT meters; the last three need recent inverter firmware.
