Overview

The HB-4020-X is the main unit of the HiBattery 4020 X system: a 4.02kWh LFP battery (314Ah, 12.8V cells) with four 1000W MPPT inputs and a 2500W single-phase inverter. It connects up to eight PV modules directly, delivers 800W rated and up to 2500W to the home, and charges or discharges the battery at up to 2000W. Up to three HB-4020-S packs extend it to 16.08kWh. It plugs into a socket or is wired into the distribution board, is rated IP66 and runs from -20°C to +55°C with automatic self-heating.

How it works

The HiBattery 4020 X combines a 4.02kWh lithium iron phosphate battery with four MPPT inputs and a bidirectional 2500W inverter in one IP66 housing. PV modules connect directly on the DC side, with up to 1000W per input and up to eight modules in total; the battery stores surplus energy and the inverter feeds the home through the on-grid port. A rated output of 800W can be raised to 2500W, and the unit can also charge from the grid at up to 2500W.

A separate off-grid port supplies a home load or a microinverter when the grid is absent, with up to 2500W. Up to three HB-4020-S expansion packs, each 4.02kWh, stack under the main unit to reach 16.08kWh; charging power then rises from 2000W to as much as 6500W with three packs, while discharge stays at up to 2500W. Below 0°C a heating film brings the cells into their charging range.

Installation and compatibility

The 520×384×199mm, 42kg unit stands on the floor against a wall and is fixed with brackets; expansion packs are stacked only while the system is unwired and switched off. On the AC side it either plugs into a household socket with the supplied MS plug-and-play cable or is wired into the distribution board by a qualified electrician. Sufficient air clearance must be left around the unit, and an optional fan cover kit adds active cooling.

For zero-feed-in control the unit reads a grid meter: Hoymiles meters or third-party Shelly devices, with up to five Shelly devices and one smart meter per system. An open MQTT interface allows integration with third-party energy management systems. The BMS provides 48 protection functions, cell balancing and pack-level DC/DC balancing, and the housing includes aerosol fire suppression, a pressure relief valve and DC terminal over-temperature protection.

Monitoring and settings

Setup runs in the S-Miles Home app over Bluetooth, after which the unit joins the home 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. In the app the user sets the output power, defines load power curves for different periods of the day (up to seven curves, one applied per day), adds meters and smart devices and updates the firmware. Off-grid mode is switched on or off with a long press on the unit's button.
